This course deals with the various topics in the defense modeling & simulation. Development of new weapons systems for the future war is increasingly becoming too costly and complicated. While at the same time, the effectiveness of the new weapons systems have to be verified and enhanced through the computer simulation even before the physical prototype is completed. Due to this reason, modeling and simulation techniques are recently receiving a lot of attentions. The course is not intended to give an exhaustive treatment of either the theory of simulation or of the domain knowledge of defense. Sufficient coverage of both will be given to enable students to treat, in reasonable depth, the application of the former to the latter.
The course introduces weapon systems analysis in order to achieve the operational efficiency through modeling mathematically the effectiveness of shooter systems and surveillance systems. The required knowledge is the fundamental understanding on diverse weapon systems and the basic statistics and probability theory. The following areas will be covered: statistics and probability basic theory, missile flight trajectory model, strike precision analysis, air to surface missile analysis, surface to surface direct and indirect weapon analysis, target acquisition, C4ISR and networking.
